Urban Woodworker’s Community Woodworking Studio in North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale recently opened its doors and before we knew it we were fully registered with waitlists. It’s been a great start to this highly anticipated new studio.
If you asked me if I could remember anyone who dislikes wood I would struggle to remember a single encounter. It’s perhaps a universal truth that virtually everyone LOVES WOOD. If you are reading this as someone who has never worked with wood and is interested in taking a first course you are in for a treat and an authentic experience, but don’t stop exploring after your first exposure to working with wood. There are so many avenues to pursue and you should give them a try before you settle on a particular direction. For example our Turning Courses at Roundhouse are often taken by people who registered because their first choice woodworking course was full. However a class or two into their turning course and they are loving it. Spoon carving is equally addictive and can be done with the lowest investment of all of the facets of woodworking. Then there is Power Tool woodworking vs. Hand Tool woodworking. Regardless, develop your own approach based on what gives you the most enjoyment. Living in an apartment as many people do in modern cities, it can be challenging to do all woodworking with Power Tools while anyone can carve a spoon in an evening in their apartment with just a little tuition and a few hand tools, no dust and no noise.
