The Urban Woodworker Approach

Our goal is to deliver an authentic learning experience. One that the student will not forget.

Urban Woodworker is a small school focussing on delivering carefully researched curricula to satisfy complete beginners and in our more advanced courses to challenge even experienced professionals.  We have high standards preferring to teach to a level that allows every beginner to develop a solid foundation on which they can develop their individual interest in woodworking.

We believe if we are to do even a simple project that we ought to do it very well.

Safety

We take a very strong stand on safety. We believe safety is not ONLY following a set of rules but is way more than that. It is more a matter of a clear comprehension of risk and how that risk is materialized. Therefore your safety is very much a matter of understanding the risk involved in a particular action and determining the best course of action to mitigate that risk. To accomplish this a clear knowledge of the process, machines operation, how accidents happen and standard-operating procedures is absolutely required. We do not apologize for a demanding safety regimen and expect students to learn and remember our available standard operating procedures.

Woodworking and working with your hands

Woodworking is not a quick study. It’s a field of expertise that can keeps a person engaged for a lifetime. Many intriguing methods and skills are being lost due to lack of interest in the trades or the allure of readily available mass produced goods. Some of these lost methods also hold a key to sustainable methods and more environmentally friendly processes.

Many who have made the decision to make more of what they use, consume and discard less.

To work with ones Hands, typically woodworking is sometimes profoundly humbling telling us that we really don’t know it all, no matter how well educated we are or think we are.  Working on even the most simple project that requires the engagement of mind and body is not only incredibly stimulating and rewarding but also healing seldom leaving the user depressed or anxious. The increased awareness and elevated consciousness of oneself slows time and leaves us feeling refreshed even invigorated.
